Brushing teeth properly and consistently helps to remove most dental plaque, but brushing alone cannot remove plaque that is located in places that a toothbrush cannot reach – particularly between teeth.
In addition to removing plaque, flossing also helps to remove debris that adheres to teeth and gums in between teeth, polish tooth surfaces and control bad breath.
Flossing should take place at least once a day for two to three minutes each time to be most effective. The different types of dental floss include waxed and unwaxed, flavoured and unflavoured and wide and regular.

An interdental brush is a small brush for getting between the teeth. They come in a variety of sizes to fit the gaps between your teeth and the right one(s) will fit snugly and clean the gum. For optimal cleaning, it is important to choose an interdental brush of the right size. Very often more than one brush size is needed. Your dentist, hygienist or dental therapist can help to select the correct brush size/sizes for you.
Use your interdental brush once a day, preferably in the evening. Move the brush back and forth a few times in each interdental space. Look in the mirror for easier use. Change the brush when it is getting worn.

A healthy tongue should be slightly moist, smooth, and pinkish in colour, but a white or yellow tongue is a strong indication of a breath problem. Although not common practice, cleaning your tongue on a regular basis can be the single most beneficial treatment for bad breath.
