Excessive sweating from the feet is a common problem and one that people often learn to live with. However it can often be associated with unpleasant odour, maceration of the toes and infections such as athlete’s foot.
Plantar hyperhidrosis can be a particular problem for athletes, particularly distance runners who can be prone to extreme discomfort caused by the excessive moisture.
Simple techniques can be used to help. Synthetic shoes and man-made fibre socks exacerbate the problem. Changing socks regularly, alternating shoes daily to allow them to dry and going barefoot whenever possible helps to reduce the problem.
Treatment options include antiperspirant or iontophoresis (using low level electric currents in a water bath), but this is not effective for all people.
BOTOX® therapy can be used to control the problem. By infiltrating the surface skin of the soles of the feet with botulinum toxin, the nerve stimulation is blocked, effectively reducing the volume of sweat that is produced. Results are not permanent with sweating returning slowly from 6 months so the procedure will need to be repeated to keep the condition under control. Sometimes it has been found that after a few treatments, top ups are required less often however.
Palmar BOTOX® treatment costs £380 for both feet – an initial consultation will be required to assess and discuss the treatment options.
